Social Spider Community News has successfully bid for a third contract under the BBC’s Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) scheme.

After winning our first two contracts in 2021 – for reporters covering Enfield, Barnet and Haringey, and Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Havering – we decided to bid for the contract previously held by MyLondon (a Reach plc publication) for the East London boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets and Barking and Dagenham.

Since 2023 we have published Newham Voices, a monthly print newspaper originally launched independently in September 2020. Our bid for the LDRS contract for Newham and the two other boroughs was submitted with help from fellow independent publisher Social Streets, which produces Tower Hamlets Slice.

We are delighted to win this contract and welcome Nick Clark as our new Local Democracy Reporter covering these three boroughs.

It now means that Social Spider CIC is one of only two LDRS contract holders in London, alongside Reach, following the BBC’s latest tendering process. A total of 165 reporters are employed under the scheme throughout the UK.
